Go Greek!

Hi there!

Forget Jersey Shore, the Greek’s are where it’s at! Just kidding, sort of. How many of you understand the difference between regular yogurt and Greek yogurt? Anyone?? It’s a tough question with revealing answers, and here’s to hoping you can see the obvious benefits.

It wasn’t until recently (last 6 months) that I decided to try Greek yogurt. At first, I thought the sound of it was kind of gross. Thicker yogurt with a sour taste–no thanks! But, I broke down and picked some up. To my surprise, it wasn’t terrible. But what even lead to that fateful first spoonful? Learning about the benefits of Greek yogurt vs. regular yogurt.

Greek yogurt contains twice as much protein as regular yogurt, making you feel fuller, longer. Also Greek yogurt contains at least half as much sugar as regular yogurt–huge bonus! Additionally, Greek yogurt contains at least the same amount of Calcium as regular, if not more. Finally, while Greek yogurt contains slightly more calories than the regular stuff, its more natural and healthy for you, so don’t even pay attention to that.

What are the health benefits? Well, in addition to everything I just said, Greek yogurt also contains more probiotics. Probiotics are bacteria and yeast microrganisms that help keep our immune system and digestive systems operating properly. Greek yogurt contains a significantly lower amount of sodium, sometimes half as much or even less than regular yogurt. Finally, Greek yogurt is substantially lower in carbohydrates than regular yogurt, giving you a fuller feeling longer, and also making it a great choice for those on strict diets.

Now, here’s one major downfall, the taste. While Greek yogurt is thicker and creamier than regular, it’s also much more sour because it is more concentrated. So, here are some fun ways to jazz up Greek yogurt.

Try adding some brown sugar(my personal fav)

Try a flavored Greek yogurt or one with Honey

Add some fruit or make a smoothie with Greek yogurt

The options are endless, as well as the brands. I personally prefer Chobani or Trader Joe’s, but it’s hard to go wrong. Still loyal to your regular yogurt brands? No worries, Dannon and Yoplait have (finally!) started producing their own Greek yogurt.

Get out there and give this stuff a try and let me know what you think! Enjoy! 🙂
